Fig. 5.11 When using a current transformer it is essential that the secondary is short-circuited before disconnecting the meter. If this is not done then a dangerously high voltage may be induced in the multi-turn secondary when the circuit is broken.

Worked Example 5.5

Q A single-phase transformer is rated at 10 kVA, 240 V/100 V. When tested the following results were obtained:

On open-circuit:Vp=240 V; Io=2.6 A; pFe=200 W

On short-circuit:Vp=18 V; Ip=100 A; pcu=250 W

Using these results calculate (a) the no-load power factor, (b) the full-load efficiency, (c) the load at which maximum efficiency occurs, and (d) the value of maximum efficiency. Assume a load power factor of 0.8.
